PHILATELIC NEWS / FIAP NEWSLETTER

MESSAGE FROM FIAP PRESIDENT

Dear Members, Colleagues and Friends,

On behalf of the FIAP, we wish you all and your family a belated Happy and Healthy New Year.

After the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic outbreaks in 2020, we are still facing a difficult and uncertain times under the COVID-19 pandemic outbreaks. Most countries had been under the tight lockdown enforcements many times to control the outbreaks. We would like to ask you to follow the instructions issued by your respective authority advice in handling this COVID-19 pandemic outbreaks. We hope that you will restrict your movements and travel until the World returns to normal.

Under this COVID-19 pandemic outbreaks, there were still some good points such as all philatelists had more free time to enjoy their treasured collection, some may even rewrite or improve their exhibits or form a new exhibit; more philatelic seminars, discussions or meetings via video conference such as zoom meeting; etc.

The physical Exhibitions, whether the National Exhibitions, the FIAP Exhibitions or the FIP Exhibitions planned for 2020 were all either postponed or cancelled with the exception of the two stamp exhibitions held in China organized by All China Philatelic Federation. Some National Exhibitions were held virtually online with easy access for philatelists to view the exhibits.

For 2021 there are many scheduled Exhibitions, National Exhibitions, Continental Exhibitions and World Exhibitions, we hoped that the COVID-19 pandemic outbreaks will be under control with the vaccine being developed and available so that we will all be able to travel and enjoy the Exhibitions and social gatherings as before. Look forward to seeing you all at PHILANIPPON 2021 and CAPE TOWN 2021. Please stay safe and healthy.

With Best Wishes,
Prakob Chirakiti

AUSVIPEX 2020

AusVipex 2020 was Australia’s first virtual National One-Frame Exhibition and was held over October-November 2020. The Exhibition replaced Australia’s National One-Frame exhibition for 2020, Hobart 2020, which was due to be held in November 2020 but was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

AusVipex 2020 had 67 one-frame exhibits covering most classes. As planned for Hobart 2020, the Exhibition included an experimental Topical Class in which exhibits are arranged by a topic classification rather than by a theme. The exhibits were placed on the Australian Philatelic Federation website so that the exhibit pages displayed full screen and are derived from high resolution scans converted to individual image files. The Judges had access to both the high-resolution images as well as the on-line versions.

The exhibits were judged by the usual jury processes followed at Australian National Exhibitions, with Jury meetings being held by Zoom. The Jury team comprised 11 jurors including one juror from New Zealand with the Jury Chair being Ian McMahon and the Jury Secretary Glen Stafford. Exhibits were judged by teams of at least three judges with the teams meeting by Zoom to judge the exhibits and reach agreement on the marks to be awarded. Zoom technology allowed the exhibit to be displayed during the discussions. The team meetings were followed by meetings of the full Jury to discuss the team results and reach a final agreement on all of the awards. The Jury meetings also selected the Best in Show, runner-up awards and the award of special prizes. A general Feedback session for the exhibitors was held by Zoom followed by individual feedback sessions led by the team leaders. The sessions were well attended.

The exhibits were of a very high standard and included 8 Large Gold exhibits, 16 Gold and 21 Large Vermeil exhibits. The Best in Show award was won by Michael Blinman for his exhibit “NSW Embossed Stationery 1838-50” (Australia’s first postal stationery) with Runners Up being Paula Sager “The Perkins Bacon 5d Diadem Stamp of New South Wales” and Stephen Browne. “The Postal History of Van Diemen’s Land to 1825”. Jury Recognition Awards were given to Marilyn Gendek “The Scottish Women’s Hospital Royaumont 1914-1918” and Mark Diserio “A Gift From Australia”. The best Topical Exhibit was Gaye and Graeme Chequer “Cattleya Orchids”.
